When a couple would like to have a child or children but is unable to conceive naturally, they need to seek treatment for infertility. There are many causes of infertility and the remedy depends on the cause.
Infertility in Men
Male infertility can be caused by inadequate sperm count in the semen, weak sperms that are unable to fertilize the egg, inadequate production of sperms and inability to have an erection.
Infertility in Women
Female infertility can be caused by inability to produce an egg, blocked fallopian tubes that do not allow the egg and sperm to meet, inability of the fertilized egg to attach to the uterus wall, and so on.
In the case of male infertility, the treatment can include collecting the semen and concentrating the sperm or removing the sperm directly from the testes. The sperm so collected can then be used to fertilize the egg by in vitro fertilization or some other suitable method. In case the fallopian tube is blocked or fibroids are present in the uterus, then the tubal block or the fibroids can be removed using a keyhole surgery. The presence of fibroids in the uterus can prevent pregnancy in many cases and by removing these it is possible to ensure a normal pregnancy.
Screening of Eggs, Sperms, and Embryos
When a couple has suffered multiple miscarriages a fertility clinic will help prevent further miscarriages by screening the eggs, sperms, and embryos to ensure that only genetically healthy eggs, sperms, and embryos are implanted in the uterus. This enhances the chances of fetal survival and a successful pregnancy and healthy baby. To this end gynecologists and fertility experts use special methods such as ICSI. In this procedure the sperm is magnified by 400 times in order to study it and ensure that it is free of defects. On the other hand the IMSI procedure enables the sperm to be magnified 7000 times to ensure that it is defect free before it is injected into the egg to fertilize it.
In case the infertility is caused by the inability of the blastocyst to embed on to the uterus wall, the fertility clinic will employ assisted hatching. In this procedure, a small hole is introduced in the wall of the blastocyst or the five day old embryo using micro manipulation. This will enable the embryo to embed itself in the wall of the uterus and the pregnancy will then proceed as usual.
In certain cases, the fertility experts will suggest that an infertile couple opt for surrogacy in order to have a child. In surrogacy, the eggs and sperm of the couple are used to make an embryo and the uterus of the surrogate is used for implanting the embryos. When a couple is unable to conceive a child through natural methods, they should consult with a fertility expert who can help determine the reason for the failure to conceive and help remedy the problem.
