Surrogacy Program And Fertility Treatment

Surrogacy programs and fertility treatments are common for those couples who are not able to conceive naturally. Each has its own pros and cons and adopting either one depends solely on the individual couple in question.

Surrogacy

Surrogacy is referred to as an instance when another woman carries and gives birth to a baby for a couple who wish to have a child. Couples may choose a surrogate for a number of reasons, including not being able to have a child naturally or even with fertility treatment, medical conditions not compatible for pregnancy. Surrogacy can be a tricky procedure and there need to be several steps taken, both by the couple as well as by the surrogate mother to ensure that the outcome is favorable for everyone involved. This includes, but is not limited to, psychiatric assessment, extensive counseling as well as independent legal advice.

The procedure of surrogacy involves a sperm and an egg produced by the parents or donor to create an embryo, which is then transferred to the uterus of the surrogate. In a scenario such as this, a surrogate has no genetic link to the child she is carrying in her womb, as her eggs are not used to conceive the child.

Couples usually have to find their own surrogate, although there are also agencies that assist with this process. Surrogates are usually counseled by these agencies on the basis of 4 main levels – legal, financial, medical and documentation wise. She is also intended to undergo a series of evaluations such as a background check, fertility evaluation and psychological evaluation.

Fertility Treatments

There are times when couples might encounter a hurdle along their journey to parenthood. In such an event, they may be advised by a specialist to seek fertility treatments as an option. After a few routine investigations and tests, a fertility specialist may be able to formulate a personalized treatment plan that fits their needs. There are many types of fertility treatments such as:

  • IVF

IVF or In Vitro fertilization involves eggs that are collected from ovaries being fertilized in a laboratory with sperm. This is usually done after a course of ovarian stimulation. After this process, a resulting embryo is then transferred back into the uterus.

  • Ovulation Cycle Tracking

This is a simple process which helps couples identify the days on which the woman is most fertile, so as to increase their chances of conceiving naturally.

  • Artificial Insemination (IUI)

This technique involves artificially inserting prepared sperm into a female’s uterus around the time of ovulation.

  • Ovulation Induction (OI)

This is a simple treatment wherein medication is used to encourage ovulation and stimulate hormones.

  • ICSI Treatment

This technique is known to be a more sophisticated form of IVF, wherein a single sperm is injected by a specialist in order to aid fertilization. This procedure is especially useful if the sperm is of poor quality.

  • Fertility Surgery

Surgery may be required to further investigate or treat conditions making it difficult for you to conceive such as endometriosis or fibroids for women, or to surgically retrieve sperm.

  • Frozen Embryo Transfer (FET)

This technique involves freezing any additional embryos created from an IVF procedure for future use. Once thawed, these embryos can be transferred if more than one treatment cycle is required.

  • Digital High Magnification

This is a technique for men who suffer reduced levels of sperm morphology. In this procedure, the laboratory digitally enlarges images of the sperm and proceeds to choose one to be injected into the egg that is most appropriate.
