Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) is a pre-emptive procedure, which involves the identification of certain genetic defects in an embryo created through in vitro fertilization, before it is implanted. This allows parents with inheritable or genetic disorders to avoid passing it on to their children. Dr. Sunita Tandulwadkar and her team at Ruby Hall Clinic, Pune's first nationally accredited hospital, have years of experience in the field of Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis and make use of the state-of-the-art equipment at the facility to conduct these analyses.

  • If they have terminated pregnancies due to serious genetic conditions
  • If either or both have a family members who is a known carrier of genetic defect.

The PGD procedure at Ruby Hall Clinic is as follows:

  • A normal in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment is carried out at the Centre in order to collect and fertilise the eggs.
  • The embryo is grown within the laboratory of the Centre for a couple of days until day 5 (Blastocyst stape)
  • A trained embryologist from Dr. Sunita Tandulwadkar’s team at Ruby Hall will remove cells from Embryo.
  • These cells are then tested to find out if the embryo itself possesses a particular gene which is responsible for causing the genetic condition in the family. All embryoes are frozen after Biopsy
  • If the diagnostic reveals that the embryo isn’t at risk for the genetic condition, it is transferred back into the womb for further development.
