When you are trying to Conceive
  • Consult Dr. Sunita Tandulwadkar or a specialist and have a pre pregnancy checkup. The doctor will examine you, review your medical history and advise you on the ideal diet, lifestyle, weight and medications you should be taking to improve your chances of pregnancy. Certain blood tests will be advised to rule out infections in mother which can affect the baby.
  • At least thirty days before you plan to become pregnant, start taking prenatal vitamins and folic acid which lowers the risks of birth defects in babies. Many prenatal vitamins capsules already have the recommended dosage of folic acid.
  • Check with your doctor what medications are safe for the pregnancy and for the baby.
  • Stop smoking and quit drinking alcohol. Limit the intake of caffeine as it can disturb your sleep pattern.
  • When you are trying to conceive there are certain foods that help. If you are in the habit of snacking, avoid junk foods and stock on healthy foods like fruits and nuts.
  • Ask your doctor about the ideal weight you should maintain for conceiving. Take the necessary steps to gain or reduce weight, if you are underweight or overweight. Exercise regularly and keep up the recommended diet.
  • Pay a visit to your dentist and make sure your mouth and teeth are healthy.
During Pregnancy
  • When you have missed your period, conduct a home pregnancy test to make sure you are pregnant. The duration of your pregnancy will be measured in weeks from the first day of the last menstrual period.
  • When you know you are pregnant, immediately consult your doctor or specialist, as this visit will provide important information to the doctor, which can be used later on, as your pregnancy progresses.
  • Schedule regular prenatal visits and make sure your weight and size of abdomen is measured. In addition, have your urine tested and blood pressure checked.
  • During the first trimester, undergo physical examination, blood tests, ultrasonography for fetal viability.
  • Second trimester tests should include fetal well being tests and fetal ultrasound test to rule out anomaly in baby. For checking gestational diabetes, you will have to take oral glucose screening test. If your blood is Rh-negative, you might have to undergo test for screening antibodies, and take Rh immunoglobulin injection.
  • In the third semester, take fetal ultrasound test to monitor baby's growth, group B streptococcus screening.
Dietary Tips
  • Include at least five portions of fruits and vegetables in your daily diet.
  • Include healthy dairy products like yogurt, cheese and milk in your diet, as they provide calcium for healthy bones.
  • Include eggs, poultry, pulses, nuts and beans for receiving adequate proteins which is required for healthy baby growth.
