The benefits of Vitamin D-rich diets have been long touted for health reasons. Vitamin D is produced in the skin when you are exposed to sunlight. It is a steroid hormone that can also be absorbed from fortified foods. Usually, vitamin D is linked to bone health, but there are has been much research lately that has linked the hormone to fertility in several mammals. According to recent studies, scientists have been analysing the role of Vitamin D in in the success of in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycles and it has been revealed that adequate proportions of vitamin D lead to higher IVF success rate as well as better quality embryos.

Vitamin D And Pregnancy

All of the best IVF clinics in Pune will tell couples who are planning to get pregnant about the benefits of a vitamin D-rich diet. Vitamin D plays a very important role in pregnancy, as an expectant mother’s body needs appropriate levels of phosphorus and calcium to allow the teeth and bones of an infant to form well. A deficiency of vitamin D during pregnancy may lead to skeletal deformities and growth retardation and has also been known to have a negative effect on birth weight.

Mothers who lack vitamin D during their pregnancy may have babies that are also vitamin D deficient when they are born. Due to this deficiency, the baby may be at risk of abnormal bone growth, rickets (which may result in deformity and fractures), as well as delayed physical development. According to research, the results of a vitamin D deficiency can last a long time, sometimes into adulthood.

Pregnant mothers are at high risk of complications such as preeclampsia if they are vitamin D deficient. It may also lead to an increased possibility of them having to undergo a C-section at the time of delivery.

Vitamin D and IVF

In the last few years, vitamin D has been the focus of many researchers who have been studying in with a view to prevent certain diseases such as multiple sclerosis, type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, colon cancer, osteoarthritis, high blood pressure and gum disease. But now, research conducted to establish a link between adequate vitamin D intake and IVF cycles has revealed a positive link between the two.

According to the research conducted, 181 women who had adequate levels of vitamin D and 152 women who are vitamin D deficient were examined. It was revealed that the women who had adequate vitamin D levels were almost twice as likely to conceive successfully through their IVF cycle as their counterparts who were deficient in the hormone. The researchers have claimed that though further testing and clinical trials are required to ascertain the findings, the link between infertility and vitamin D deficiency is evident.

How to Include Vitamin D in Your Diet

It isn’t necessary for expectant mothers or women who are planning to undergo an IVF cycle to rush out and grab their vitamin D supplements just as yet. On the contrary, most medical professionals believe that both men and women should start taking a multivitamin as part of their fertility program. For those individuals who have a vitamin D deficiency, they can increase the hormone by stepping out into the morning sun and getting some precious sunlight into their systems. They can also eat fortified foods such as milk and orange juice. Others foods like fatty fish like salmon and tuna, egg yolks and cheese are also high in vitamin D.
